Why receipt photos fail OCR

Text recognition needs dark characters on an evenly light background. Receipt photos often have the opposite: a shadow across one half, a warm indoor color cast, low-contrast gray print on thermal paper, and a tilt that bends the lines. Each of these makes characters merge or vanish.

What each control does

Crop to paper maps the four corners you place to a flat rectangle, removing the table and correcting perspective. Straighten fixes small rotations. Auto brighten stretches the darkest and lightest tones to full black and white. Black & white scan uses adaptive thresholding: each pixel is compared with its neighbourhood, so shadows and gradients disappear while text stays sharp. Raise the scan threshold if faint print drops out, lower it if speckles appear.

Faded thermal receipts

Thermal paper darkens text with heat and fades with light, heat and time. Enhance and save a copy as soon as you can, and keep it with your records — see how long to keep receipts. If the print is already gone, the lost receipt guide explains what to use instead.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a faded receipt readable?

Load the photo, choose “Black & white scan” and raise the scan threshold until the faint characters appear. Auto brighten and sharpen help further.

Can I fix a receipt photo taken at an angle?

Yes. Tap “Crop to paper”, drag the four handles to the receipt corners and apply. The tool flattens the perspective as if the receipt were scanned from above.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. All processing happens in your browser on a canvas element. The downloaded file is created locally.

What format should I download?

PNG for black-and-white scans (sharp, small) and JPG for color or grayscale photos.

Does it work on phones?

Yes. You can take a photo directly from the file picker on iPhone and Android, and the crop handles work with touch.
