Receipt Scanning
Point the camera and the merchant, date, total, tax and currency are read on the device. You confirm them before anything is saved, because OCR is a shortcut, not evidence.
Learn moreReceGuard turns a receipt into a record that still makes sense months later. Text recognition runs on your iPhone, no account is required to start, and nothing is uploaded unless you switch on iCloud sync — which uses your own private iCloud database rather than a ReceGuard-operated server.
Every feature below exists to make one future question easier to answer: what was bought, why the business needed it, when it happened, and where the evidence is.

Learn moreA long till roll or an itemised invoice is one receipt across several pages. Add pages during a scan or months later, and the whole set is read together.
Learn moreThe tender line says which card paid. Name that card once and every later receipt from it arrives already filed against the right account.
Learn moreRecord a drive with GPS or enter it by hand, with the date, destination, purpose and vehicle a log actually needs. Both 2026 rates are applied by trip date.
Learn moreExport a structured package with a receipt ledger, mileage log, category totals and the supporting images — as CSV, XLSX or PDF, whenever you want it.
Learn moreRecognition runs on the device, no account is required to start, and sync — if you turn it on — uses your own private iCloud database, not our servers.
Learn moreAttach return windows, warranty end dates, serial numbers and product photos to a purchase, and hear about the deadline before it passes, not after.
Learn moreNot every receipt is paper. Share a PDF straight from Mail and it is read and filed like any other — no printing, no saving the file first.
Learn moreA small square that opens the scanner in one tap, and shows this month's spend and today's remaining scans the rest of the time.
Learn moreNine variants that change the palette, the typeface, the corner shapes and the textures — not just an accent colour. Two are free.
Learn moreSearch merchants, the full text printed on the receipt, categories, notes, tags and card tails. A record you cannot retrieve is not really a record.
Learn moreReceipt apps are easy to compare by their camera screen. The more useful comparison is the record they create afterwards, because that is what you will actually rely on. ReceGuard is built around four moments, and every feature belongs to one of them.
Scan paper at the till, or share an emailed PDF straight from Mail. Multi-page receipts stay one entry.
The merchant, date, total, tax and card are read on the device and shown to you before anything is saved.
Add the category and one line of business purpose — the two things no scanner can produce for you.
Pull a CSV, XLSX or PDF package with the images attached, whenever an accountant or a deadline asks.
IRS Publication 463 sets a plain bar for documentary evidence: it should show the amount, the date, the place and the essential character of the expense. Four things. A photograph of a slip gives you three of them and leaves the fourth — why the business needed it — to memory, which is exactly the part that fails.
That is why the app asks you to confirm what it read and to write a line of purpose before filing. It takes about eight seconds per receipt and it is the difference between an archive you can rely on and a database of plausible-looking numbers. For travel, meals, gifts and vehicle use it is not optional at all: those categories require strict substantiation, and the estimation rule that rescues an ordinary expense with a missing receipt does not apply to them.
The free tier is a working app, not a demo. It scans receipts with the same on-device recognition, logs mileage, exports tax packages, and needs no account. What Pro removes is the daily ceiling, and what it adds is the longer-term machinery: sync, warranty tracking, inventory, a lock, and the rest of the themes.

Note what is not behind the paywall: the recognition quality, the ability to correct it, the multi-page handling and the export. The parts that decide whether your records are trustworthy are the same on both tiers.
Tax records have to survive longer than most software does. The IRS expects most of them to be kept three years from filing, six if income was under-reported by more than a quarter, and seven for a worthless securities or bad debt claim. Employment tax records run four years; property records run until the limitation period expires for the year you dispose of the asset.
No receipt app should ask you to bet a seven-year obligation on it still existing. That is why the export produces open formats with the images attached rather than a proprietary archive, and why we suggest pulling one every quarter and keeping it somewhere you control. If ReceGuard vanished tomorrow, those files would still be readable.
ReceGuard is a personal record-keeping app. It has no approval workflows, no company card feeds, no reimbursement routing and no general ledger. If you need staff submitting expenses for sign-off, a team expense platform exists for good reasons and you should use one — you would be paying us for an approval queue with one person in it.
What it is built for is the freelancer, contractor or sole trader who keeps their own books: someone whose receipts arrive in a pocket and an inbox, who drives to clients, and who needs all of it to make sense to an accountant once a year without a fortnight of archaeology in April.
It also does not make tax decisions. It organises records, applies published mileage rates by trip date, and groups expenses under the lines your form uses. What you claim, and whether you may, stays between you and a qualified tax professional.
Scan one receipt from your wallet. Check the four numbers the app read back against the image, write one line about why you bought it, and save. That is the whole loop, and it takes about twenty seconds once the habit forms.
If you want to see what the finished records look like before committing, the free tools run entirely in the browser with no app at all, and the guides cover the recordkeeping rules the app is shaped around — what counts as adequate evidence, how long to keep it, and which expense categories need more than a photograph.
No. Text recognition runs on your iPhone through Apple's Vision framework, and scanning works in aeroplane mode. If you switch on sync, records go to your own private iCloud database rather than to a ReceGuard-operated server.
No. Open the app and scan. There is no email, sign-up or profile. Sign in with Apple is optional and only links a subscription across your devices.
It is a working app with a daily ceiling: two receipt scans and one short mileage trip a day, with the same recognition, multi-page handling and tax exports as Pro.
Yes. Pages stay attached to one entry and are read together, so a total printed on page three is still found. You can add pages to a receipt you saved months ago.
Yes. The app handles multiple currencies, European date formats and split VAT lines, and it can group expenses under German Anlage EÜR categories as well as US Schedule C lines. Tax vocabulary beyond those two is generic recordkeeping rather than country-specific filing support.
Your data stays on your device and remains exportable. Pro features stop, but nothing already captured is taken away or locked behind the paywall.
No. It organises records, applies published mileage rates by trip date, and groups expenses under the lines your form uses. A qualified tax professional should make the final call on your return.
No account, no upload, no setup. Scan something from your wallet and see what the record looks like.
